  1. Integrity Workshop

     

    Integrity 2010

     

    With the assistance of the World Customs Organisation (WCO),the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) organised an Integrity Self-Assessment Workshop from 06 to 10 September 2010. The workshop was held at the New Customs House at Mer Rouge, Port Louis. The resource persons were Mrs Patricia Revesz, Integrity Development Officer at WCO in Brussels and Mr Serge Duhamel, Regional Director of Customs, France, presently on secondment in the Capacity Building Directorate of the WCO.The Workshop was launched by the Chief guest, Mr Anil Kumar Ujodha, Director General, Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The objective of the workshop was to assess the integrity level of the MRA vis-à-vis its internal and external stakeholders, to emphasise on the MRA anti-corruption strategies and to come up with an Integrity Action Plan for the MRA in line with the ten elements of the Revised Arusha Declaration.

     

  2. Tanzania Revenue Authority Study Tour

    A delegation from the Tanzanian Revenue Authority effected a study tour at the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) from 20th to 24th September 2010 at the MRA, Ehram Court, Port Louis. On 20th September, Mr. S.Lal, Director General, MRA made a presentation to the delegation. The study program consisted of an overview of the main business processes of the MRA that have been implemented through the SAP ERP. Amongst the objective of the study tour, the gathering of information towards the setting up of a world class revenue management system in Tanzania.

     

  3. Drug Detector reinforcement

     

    Drug Detection

     

    The MRA Customs has acquired three new drug detector dogs from the South Africa Revenue Service (SARS) thus bringing the total number of detector dogs to 6.These dogs will enhance customs capacity to detect drugs at ports of entry. The dogs will operate both at the sea-port and at the airport and will undertake operations involving passengers, cargo, parcels. The Hon.Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economic Development along with Mr. V Hassamal, Chairperson MRA Board, Mr. S. Lal,Director General MRA, and other Officers of the MRA and the representative of local media were present on 18 September 2010 at the Reduit Agricultural Center (Quarantine Unit) for a visit. Mrs. Wenda Kapp, who holds the rank of Commander in SARS Customs and who has sixteen years of drug and police dog training experience and is responsible for the training of the dog handlers, who were also present.

  4. Launching of VAT Training Manual

     

    VAT Manual 2010

     

    A Training Manual on VAT Law and Practice was launched on Thursday 23 September 2010. Mr. Mario Hannelas, Director MSTD made a presentation and gave an overview of the MRA VAT Training manual before the chairperson, the Management team and other middle management staff of compliance department. In his address, the Director General MRA also commended this laudable initiative of Mr. M Hannelas and the team of MRA Officers who assisted him in the production of the VAT Training manual. The VAT Training Manual was launched by the Chief Guest Mr. V Hassamal, Chairperson MRA Board.

     

  5. MRA Annual Mass

     

    Annual Mass

     

    On 21st September, the MRA Customs Annual mass was celebrated at the Saint Antoine Chapel. That special date coincides with the celebration of Saint Matthew Day, the Saint Patron of tax collectors. Since 1981, the Customs Department has been commemorating this event which has given us the opportunity to bring officers to pray together and to thank God for all personal and workplace achievements.
