  1. DTAA Portugal and Mauritius

    DTAA2011portugal

    The first round of negotiations for the conclusion of a Convention between Mauritius and Portugal for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income were held at the MRA from 30 March to 01 April 2011.

     

    The Mauritius delegation was headed by Mr. Mustupha Mosafeer, Director, Large Taxpayers Department and International Taxation Unit, Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), while the Portuguese delegation was led by Mr. Miguel Serrao, Tax Adviser, Centre for Fiscal Studies, Ministry of Finance.

     

    The negotiations were held in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and cooperation. At the close of the discussions, certain issues have remained unresolved. Both delegations have agreed to pursue discussions with a view to resolving those issues during a second round of negotiations to be held in Lisbon, Portugal.

  2. E Filing 2011

    The deadline to submit individual returns for year of assessment 2011 was 31 March 2011.However, MRA offered taxpayers an extended period of 15 days, that is, up to 15 April 2011 to submit their returns provided that the submission is done electronically and payment, if any, was done through internet banking.

     

    MRA received 75 000 returns electronically which represents 65% of the total number of returns posted on the MRA website. The e-filing draw is scheduled for mid-May 2011 (the details will be published in the press) under the supervision of the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) and the names of the winners will be published. MRA wishes to thank all e-filers who have contributed to make the e-filing initiative a success. Though this is a great achievement as compared to the figure of 44 913 E Filers for the year of Assessment 2010, MRA targets a 100% E Filing of individual income tax returns in the years to come.

  3. MEXA Courtesy Call

    The new chairman of the Mauritius Export Association (MEXA) Mr Guillaume Hugnin, along with the executive members of the MEXA, paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the MRA, Mr Sudhamo Lal on 19th April 2011. The meeting created an opportunity to highlight the good working relationship and to make a follow up on some issues namely; e- Payment, e filing& Blue Channel.

  4. Seminar on Revenue Laws at UOM

    The Students at Work Club (SAW) from the University of Mauritius in collaboration with the Mauritius Revenue Authority organized a seminar on Revenue Laws on Friday 15 April 2011 at the seat of the University of Mauritius. The seminar was dispensed by Mr M.Mosafeer, Director Large Taxpayer Department. Some fifty Law students benefitted from the practical side of Revenue legislations. The seminar exposed the salient issues of the structure of the MRA, practical aspects of Income Tax Laws and the implications of Tax treaties. The seminar was very fruitful to the students and they appreciated the efforts of the MRA to sensitize the public.

  5. Workshop on Interview Techniques

    A two-half day workshop from Tuesday 12 to Wednesday 13 April 2011 was organized at the seat of MRA, Ehram Court. The workshop was based on Interviewing Skills & Techniques. A three hour wrap up session was also held on Thursday 28 April 2011. The workshop was conducted by resource persons from Core Services (Mtius) Ltd. The objective of the workshop was to sharpen and fine tune interviewing skills of participants thereby accurately selecting the best potential and competencies to match those required for job success. The abilities enhanced were :

    1. Identification of the competencies needed for all key positions
    2. Building interview skills and confidence for more accurate selection decision

     

    In a nutshell, the overall outcome of this workshop was to increase MRA efficiency and effectiveness in the employee selection process

  6. Corporate Sport activities

    CSA2011

    Corporate sports activities are among the most popular outdoor team building activities organized by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). The organization is affiliated with the Fédération Mauricienne des Sports Corporatifs (FMSC) since August 2010 and participates regularly in various activities. For the month of April, the MRA Volleyball team won a friendly match against the State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) and our Football team won the first qualifying match for the local Premier League Football against the SBM football team.

     

    The friendly volleyball match was organized jointly by the MRA and SBM and was held at the SBM Park at La Vigie on Friday 29th April 1t 7 p.m. Both teams played well and the result of the match was difficult to predict until the last minutes of play. MRA won the first set and the SBM won the second set. MRA won the last set 15 to 8. MRA received a souvenir gift and offered one to the SBM team. The players of the volleyball team are: Mr. Bholah Yavin Raj, Mr. Boodhoo Devraj, Mr. Bundhun Fayzal, Mr. Doorgah Parmanand, Mr. Dunnoo Deepak Kumar, Mr. Koonjee Sudhakarsingh, Mr. Lallmon Pranesh, Mr. Meajun Acktarally, Ms Mootien Pamela Gladys, Mr. Purmah Sooryadev Singh, Mr. Ramchurn Nitising, Mr. Ramnarain Rajendra Gupta.

     

    On Saturday 30th April 2011, the MRA football team played against the SBM football team at the Trianon football ground. The match was crucial for both teams as the loser would have to quit the local corporate Premier League, while the winner would be allowed to play another match for qualification. The MRA team was well prepared and trained for several weeks. Both teams played well and the MRA finally won the match 2-0. The names of the players for the football team are as follows: Mr. Raumessur Subash, Mr. Ubhee Sunjeev, Mr. Behary Moonish, Mr. Raumessur Viraj, Mr. Raumessur Sandip, Mr. Sullyman Mohammad Mehdi, Mr. Ramasamy Niven Vadivel, Mr. Bholah Yavin Raj, Mr. Nurmohamed Fayzal, Mr. Jaunky Yuvraj, Mr. Ramluchumun Ghanshiam, Mr. Keesoon Tarkeshwar, Mr. Boodhoo Devraj, Mr. Nabeebokus Parvez, Mr. Sandapa Alvin Kevin.

    During the year 2011, MRA will also participate in other sport activities organized by the FMSC, namely:

    • Open Petanque & Triplette Championships
    • Beach Volley Festival
    • Volleyball
    • Badminton Championship
    • Billiards Tournament
    • Tennis Tournament
    • Athletics Meet
    • Trail (10 KMS)
